Captain Derek specializes in tarpon fishing in Boca Grande as he grew up in Placida and has fished the waters since he was a child with his father. Something about seeing the tarpon jump 4-6 feet out of the water doing flip after flip gets the blood flowing. Our day will typically start before the sun comes up and do 1 of 2 things, head right to Boca Grande Pass and drift the pass or fish the beaches. Capt Derek will know where to have the greatest chance of hooking a tarpon. He prefers beach fishing for tarpon but most times you will catch more tarpon in the passes. Around 9-10 am the bite slows down just a bit so if we fished the pass in the morning then we will go look for other fish on the beaches near Englewood FL or Boca Grande Beach. We will typically fish schools of 10-30 fish when we find them on the beach as stealthy as we can. It’s super important to be quiet when fishing for tarpon. Around 12pm to 2pm We might grab lunch at a local restaurant in Boca Grande called Millers. On full days it’s nice to get out of the sun for an hour or so. The afternoon is a great time. The afternoon fishing can sometimes be insane fishing Capt Derek has hooked over 20 tarpon in one afternoon before. It really all depends on the tides. The best time to fish is on a high tide. The water is rushing out to sea and all the bait goes with it and the tarpon feed like crazy. This sometimes goes into the night and we will stay out sometimes after dark catching giants.
